Lisa-Marie Harris is a contemporary artist from Trinidad & Tobago, living and working in London. Her practice addresses the dehumanisation of women by interrogating how their bodies are re-framed as things, and are reduced to objects meant to be separated, stretched, and reassembled. Challenging a capitalist positioning of female bodies as sites of desire, labour, and extraction, Harris' practice seeks to reclaim physical autonomy and invert the agentic denials set upon the female body. Taking an interroceptive (internally sensing) approach, her work is concerned with locating and releasing the flesh memories held within a woman's body, as a way of understanding its core existence, or its 'bodyhood' as termed by Harris. Her work is informed by a personal history of motherhood and reproduction; Trinidadian/Caribbean culture, mythology, ecology; and migration.
Harris received her MA (distinction) in 2021 from Central Saint Martins, London UK, and her B.Sc. (summa cum laude; highest hons.) in 2012 from The New School, New York City, USA. She is the recipient of The Ingram Prize (2022) The Helen Scott Lidgett Award `(2022), and the Jane Carole Clarke Award (2021). Recent solo exhibitions include: Highly Strung, MiArt, Milan IT (2024); The Pusher and The Pull, Lightbox Museum, Woking UK (2023); RESPONSES (To Things I've Been Told About My Body) Cooke Latham Gallery, London UK (2023). Selected group exhibitions include: Contested Bodies, Stanley and Audrey Burton Galleries, University of Leeds, UK (2023); RAW NERVES, Hannah Barry Gallery, London UK (2022); Curved Space, Peer Gallery, London UK (2022); Curated II - WOMXN, Unit 1 Gallery, London (2022); REAL Fake, How The Light Gets In, Hay-on-Wye (2022).
