Lisa-Marie Harris (b. Mt. Hope, Trinidad) is a contemporary artist from Trinidad & Tobago, living and working in London. Her practice addresses the objectification and dehumanisation of women by interrogating how their bodies are re-framed as things, and are reduced to objects meant to be separated, stretched, and reassembled into contested sites of desire and extraction.

Combining organic materials (namely archival leather and hand-carved Trinidadian calabash rinds/gourds) with deconstructed industrial/mechanical parts reclaimed from the domestic spaces of feminine labour (steel apartment intercoms, metal frames from baby strollers/high chairs, etc), Harris' work is informed by a personal history of motherhood and reproduction; Trinidadian and Afro-Caribbean culture, mythology and ecology; and migration. Desired for its cultural utility as an offering bowl in Afro-Caribbean cultural and syncretic spiritual practices but detested for the putrid smell, visual stain, and unsightly characteristics of its innards, the cavernous recesses of a gutted calabash and the near-symmetry of its sleek curvature signifies the oft-used woman's body within Harris' sculptural practice.

This symbolism is employed across her work as an interroceptive (internally sensing) means of understanding the female body's existence, or its 'bodyhood' as termed by Harris; her works seek to locate and release the flesh memories repressed within a woman's body. To that end, supple leathers are pulled taut to its breaking point before being hand-sewn in the repetitive, restrained, and exacting manner expected of 'womanly work,' giving form to biomorphic and tensile abstractions which only hint at feminine readiness in passing but are nonetheless burdened with the expectations of the viewer's lust.
