Courtesy Studio Chapple Gallery: ‘EASE THE TENSION’, a solo exhibition by the Trinidad-born, London based artist Lisa-Marie Harris, looks beyond the visual lexicon of masquerade to outline the existence of Trinidad Carnival as cultural affirmation, and the bodies within as agents of provocation, release, and autonomy.
The works on show in EASE THE TENSION were developed from a sculptural, live-art work mounted in 2024 during Harris' first return to Trinidad Carnival since migrating many years prior. Synthesizing Trinbagonian bélè dance and wirebending techniques with the abstraction and the materiality of her practice across sculpture, moving image and a soundscape, EASE THE TENSION exists as a paean to the energetic, bodily release at the heart of the revelery.
